Kanpur, Sep 23 (PTI) In April last year, in a private hospital in Kanpur’s Rawatpur area, his relatives kept the dead body in their house for more than a year after being considered in a coma.
The deceased has been identified as Vimlesh Dixit, working in the Income Tax Department. The incident came to light on Friday when the policemen and magistrate, along with health officials, reached the man’s house to investigate a case and found the body there.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Alok Ranjan said, “Vimlesh Dixit died on April 22 last year, but the family was reluctant to perform the last rites as they believed Dixit was in a coma.”
He said, “I was informed by the Income Tax officials of Kanpur, who requested a probe into the matter.” The CMO said that when the medical team reached his house, the family members were insisting that Vimlesh is alive and in a coma. After much persuasion, the family members allowed the health team to take the body to Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, where he was declared brought dead on medical examination.
The CMO said that a three-member team consisting of Dr AP Gautam, Dr Asif and Dr Avinash has been constituted to investigate the matter and submit the report at the earliest.
An official said on the condition of anonymity that Vimlesh’s wife used to sprinkle ‘Gangajal’ on the body every morning as she hoped that doing so would help her come out of her ‘coma’. The official said the family had also told their neighbors that Vimlesh was in a ‘coma’. “The family members were often seen carrying oxygen cylinders home,” one of the neighbors told the police.
Police said that the body was completely decomposed. An official said that Dixit’s wife appears to be mentally weak. Kanpur Police said in a statement that the private hospital had stated in the death certificate that Vimlesh Dixit died on April 22, 2021 due to a sudden heart attack.
