Donald Trump repeated his inexplicable – and potentially racist – nickname for New York Attorney General Letitia James, who earlier this week hit him and the Trump Organization with a $250m fraud lawsuit.
“There is no better example of the left’s penchant for targeting political opponents than the baseless, abusive and vile lawsuit against me, my family, and my company by the racist Attorney General of the State of New York. Leticia ‘Peekaboo’ James,” Mr Trump said. told the crowd in Wilmington.
The speech included several vicious insults at Ms James, including calling her a “raging maniac” and a “leftist nutjob”, but he returned again and again to the nickname “Peekaboo”.
This isn’t the first time a former president has used the moniker for an attorney general.
Earlier this week, in response to the New York suit, Mr Trump vented his shame.
“Racist AG Letitia ‘Peekaboo’ James, a failed gubernatorial candidate, is now second only to strongman crime fighter Michael Henry,” he said. wrote On social media. “This is very upsetting because she is a terrible AG when it comes to protecting the people of New York State. Murder, rape and drugs are completely out of control.
Critics argue that Trump is the one who is actually racist against James, who is black.
They pointed out how “peekaboo” rhymes with the “j-word,” a slur for African-Americans.
“Is anyone getting super racist vibes from Trump with Letitia James’ nickname ‘Peekaboo’? Good God,” USA Today columnist Rex Hupke wrote on Twitter Wednesday.
Mr Trump’s former fixer and lawyer Michael Cohen, meanwhile, argued the nickname was meaningless and portrayed the former president as immature and suffering from cognitive decline.
“My opinion? He has dementia,” Mr Cohen said internal On Thursday, he suspected the nickname was intended as a racist dog-whistle. “Especially with the added pressure on him now.”
“Let me put it this way,” Mr. Cohen continued. “When you sit and listen to Trump speak, you realize he has the vocabulary of a 10-year-old. He’s using peekaboo as a term for hide and seek.”
The Independent Ms James and Mr Trump have been contacted for comment.
