ANKARA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – January 21, 2023) The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador in connection with the upcoming Koran burning operation in Stockholm, a diplomatic source in Ankara told Sputnik.

The press reported on Friday that the leader of the Danish right-wing political party Stram Kurs, Rasmus Paludan, received permission to burn a copy of the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm on Saturday, January 21.

“Having learned that the burning of the holy book of the Koran will be allowed tomorrow in front of our embassy in Stockholm in Sweden, the Swedish ambassador in Ankara was invited to our ministry today,” a diplomatic source told Sputnik on Friday.

The source added that insulting sacred values cannot be defended under the guise of “democratic rights” and that the Turkish Foreign Ministry strongly condemns such provocative actions and is waiting for Sweden to withdraw its permission to burn the Koran.

A diplomatic source also told Sputnik that groups linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which Ankara has designated as terrorists, plan to hold demonstrations in central Stockholm on Saturday.

“Allowing the propaganda activities of terrorist organizations and their supporters is a clear violation of the trilateral memorandum (on security threats) signed (by Turkey, Sweden and Finland) in Madrid (June 28, 2022),” the source said. .

Turkish Foreign Minister Mavlut Cavusoglu said last week that Ankara expects Sweden to take concrete measures against the PKK, not just to condemn the protests of its members and supporters in Stockholm.

At the beginning of January, PKK supporters held demonstrations in the capital of Sweden and hung the statue of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at his feet. The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador in Ankara to protest the PKK rally. In addition, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Turkey opened a criminal case in connection with this demonstration.
