The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday raided the premises of Popular Front of India (PFI) in 10 states. A large number of PFI workers have been arrested during this period. These raids have taken place in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana etc.

PFI members have also staged vigorous demonstrations at many places in protest against the raids. The PFI has said that it strongly opposes the raids. Investigation agency ED is also involved in the raid.

According to India Today, over 100 PFI workers have been arrested from 10 states and the Home Ministry is monitoring the entire operation. It is being described as the biggest operation of NIA till date.

The raids are being conducted by the NIA in connection with allegations of terror funding, running training camps and radicalizing the youth. A team of more than 200 officers and members of NIA is carrying out this raid.

The residence and office of the PFI chairman in Kerala’s Mallapuram district were raided on Wednesday night. The NIA has conducted raids at various places in Tamil Nadu including Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, Thirunelveli and Tenkasi.

In the last few days, the NIA has registered more than a dozen cases against people associated with PFI. On September 18 also, NIA had raided 23 places in Andhra Pradesh and PFI workers were interrogated. NIA officers conducted raids in Nizamabad, Kurnool, Guntur and Nellore districts of Telangana.

The PFI has said on the raid that it is an attempt by the fascist government to suppress the voice of dissent by misusing the agencies and it strongly opposes it.

What does PFI do?

PFI currently has a wide organization in 12 states and is active in 23 states. PFI claims that it works for Muslim welfare as well as human rights. But on the other hand, intelligence agencies say that this is just a sham. The name of PFI came in the case of riots in Delhi in 2020. Prior to that, the Uttar Pradesh Police had said that the PFI was involved in the agitations against the CAA.

After the statement of BJP leader Nupur Sharma, the name of PFI also came up in the case of communal violence in Kanpur.
