The police refused to produce Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry in the Lahore High Court (LHC) without a written order.
A petition was filed in the apex court challenging Fawad Chaudhry’s arrest for “threatening” members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and their families. The petition was later accepted by LHC Justice Tariq Salim Shaikh. During the trial, the court ordered the police to bring Fawad to court by 1:30 p.m.
The PTI soldier was taken into custody in the early hours of Wednesday after he was booked under Sections 153A, 506 and 124A of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint filed by Election Commission of Pakistan Secretary Umer Hameed.
In a brief interaction with the media, the PTI leader said that security was provided as the “terrorist” was brought to court, adding that he was not aware of the charges against him. He also called on the people to take to the streets against the government. According to him, Nelson Mandela, the former president of the Republic of South Africa, was also arrested on charges of sedition.
Mr Chaudhry’s sudden arrest has angered PTI leaders, including Hammad Azhar and Farrukh Habib, who have warned of nationwide protests and a court case against him.
