BUDAPEST (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – February 23, 2023) Russian technology may replace German technology at Hungary’s Pax-2 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) if the German government blocks Siemens in the construction project, the foreign minister said. Peter Sijarto.

Szijjártó previously said that German Foreign Minister Annalen Baerbock and Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the Green Party are obstructing the construction of the Pax-2 power plant in order to transfer the process control system to Siemens, which does not allow the construction of new units. Meanwhile, the French government granted a similar permit to Framatome. According to Szijarto, Budapest considers Germany’s behavior unacceptable and illegal and considers it a violation of Hungary’s sovereignty.

“I want to say that the European Union is building a nuclear power plant with control technologies from two powerful European countries, but at the same time the German government is in danger that they should be replaced with Russian technology.

Is this a wise move by the German government?” Szijjártó told Hungarian journalists at a press conference with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, which was broadcast on Facebook (an extremist social network banned in Russia).

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary said that negotiations are ongoing with another member of the Framatome consortium to increase the role of the company in the construction of new units of the Paks power plant.

“And now it’s not a question of what Russian technologies are, because it is known that (the Russian State Nuclear Corporation) Rosatom is one of the leading companies in the world market with one of the best nuclear technologies. But why does the German government do not want the companies of the two most powerful European countries to provide control technologies to the nuclear power plants being built in the EU?” – he asked rhetorically.
