Awami Muslim League (AML) Chairman Sheikh Rasheed on Friday expressed concern that the ball is now in the court of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the election of the interim chief minister of Punjab.

The Punjab government and the opposition could not reach an agreement on the appointment of the caretaker prime minister, as both sides have reservations about the nominated candidates.

According to the Constitution, the election authority will announce the names of the four candidates sent by both parties within two days.

The ruling coalition has recommended Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera and Naseer Ahmed Khan, while the opposition has nominated Ahad Reza Cheema and Mohsin Naqvi for the post.

The former interior minister said in a tweet that the nation is aware of the foul play to elect the caretaker prime minister.

The situation worsened to such an extent that it became a matter of national security.

According to him, Raja Parvaiz Ashraf, the Speaker of the National Assembly, has created another political crisis by accepting the resignation of members of the parliament. A senior politician said: “The holding of elections is equivalent to promoting thieves.”
