London: A savings plan has been announced by the UK government to combat plastic waste.
Under the scheme, consumers will be charged 20p per plastic bottle. This amount will be refunded to the customer when the empty bottle is returned.
According to sources, reverse vending machines are likely to be installed in supermarkets and other shops where empty bottles can be placed and cash can be withdrawn from the voucher.
Every year in the UK, consumers use around 14 billion plastic bottles and nine billion cans, most of which end up in waste or landfill.
A new plan will be introduced by the government in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in 2025, which will work to bring about the necessary changes in the industry. The implementation of this plan will ensure an 85 percent reduction in plastic waste after three years.
This plan was first proposed 13 years ago by British Prime Minister David Cameron and then Secretary of State Michael Gove in 2017.
Please note that glass bottles are not returnable under the scheme.
