The Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) government also decided against the Governor’s joint address to the state legislature at the start of the budget session on February 3. The assembly secretariat says the next session will be just one of the adjourned monsoon session in October. There is continuity.

The development comes as governors and chief ministers are pitted against each other in several non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Punjab and Jharkhand. A political controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu earlier this month when Governor RN Ravi left out parts of his speech on the state government’s achievements in governance and implementation of Dravidian policies while addressing the state assembly.

The Telangana government, in a letter to the governor on Monday, asked him to curtail the flag-hoisting ceremony and other Republic Day celebrations at the Raj Bhavan. The state government cited “corona restrictions” as the reason for canceling the ceremonial parade and Governor’s address at the Secunderabad Parade Ground on January 26 this year.

This effectively means that there will be no formal parade and guard of honor for the governor on January 26 this year, a senior Raj Bhavan official told HT.
