MEXICO CITY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – February 22, 2023) The death toll from the typhoon and landslide in Brazil has reached 46, and rescue teams are still searching for more than 40 missing people, Brazilian media reported on Tuesday.

Earlier reports put the death toll at 44.

According to the news portal G1, on Tuesday morning, rescue teams resumed the search for survivors after the typhoon that destroyed the northern coast of the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo at the end of the week. The search operation for 49 missing persons continues.

The municipality of San Sebastião was hardest hit, with 45 of the 46 confirmed victims there, the report said.

According to the authorities of Sao Paulo, 766 people were left homeless in this area due to floods and landslides, and 1730 people were relocated from the affected areas. The governor of São Paulo, Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas, has declared a state of emergency in several municipalities of the state.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva regarding the tragic floods in Sao Paulo.
