WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – January 24, 2023) The United States is ready to consider “all options” under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement if Mexico does not lift restrictions on the import of genetically modified corn from the United States, officials from the representative office said. The US Department of Commerce and the Department of Agriculture said in a joint statement after meeting with relevant officials in Mexico City.

The Biden administration is “gravely concerned” by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s plans to phase out the use and import of genetically engineered corn and other products by January 31, 2024.

“We made it clear today that if this matter is not resolved, we will consider all options, including formal action to enforce our rights under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement,” the statement said Monday.

The Biden administration sees Mexico’s proposed changes to its biotechnology policy in November as insufficient and warns that its new approach could lead to billions of dollars in disruptions to bilateral trade, the statement said.

According to the statement, it is said that the meetings with representatives of the Mexican government were represented by the Office of the US Trade Representative, the chief negotiator for agriculture, Doug McCalip, and the deputy secretary of agriculture for trade and foreign affairs, Alexis Taylor.

The United States exported $4.7 billion worth of corn to Mexico in 2021, according to government data.
